This group is probably the best group for OT computer topics, since assembly
programmers generally know a lot about computers. I have even read History
and Politics lessons in here .....(Beth :-) )

Therefore I feel not so bad about bringing on a new OT Topic that has been
on my mind for a long time.
For years I have been deprived from REAL access to the internet. Using a
Modem, it takes a LONG time to download even the newsgroups. Expensive to.
So I am kind of set back, not upto date on many subjects.
But finally I got my own 24/7 permanent connection and can finally stay
online to learn more.

My fields has been Win31/win32 programming. During my many hours looking
throught the Win API, and testing out features, I have only on rare
occations found real bugs. Example was the arranangement of parameters for
the JournalPlaybackHooks on Win31 systems. I have found bugs, but most
times, any bug in my code, after hours of testing, turned out to be my
errors and not the OS. Like with the pchars on Win3.X systems. But still
every time I have been furious and called out in rage to the (IMO) stupid
syntax of many of the APIs and the strange code in the examples. Only to
discover later that I was the problem, for not fully understanding the
documentation. But to repeat, bugs I have not found much of. So in general I
have not found a reason to really complain. Also free information on
internet seems available from MS.

>From other people, espesially youngsters, I have noticed an extreme anger
towards MS theese past years. Its seems that a collective hatered has been
borned towards this company. And now I see it all over the place. Myself has
been in anger because I think MS is not nice to me, in that every new OS,
makes my new hardware, run about as slow, or slower than my former hardware.
My view is that at this time. After 18 years, the Windows OS should run like
a bat out of hell. But the fact is that on my 1500Mhz AMD, its CRAWLS.
Compared to games, the shell works like its near death.
I noticed that Win95 came with about 50 default DLL loaded, and that Win98
came with about 100 dll default. Many of them seems to have something to to
with the internet, and that was irritating since I most of the time do not
use the internet back then.

Other things that irritates me is that there seems to be enabled lots of
features by default in their newest operating systems (ME/XP) that I dont
like. System Restore, Automatic Update and stuff like that. They allways
seem to cause more problems than they solve. All the people I know disable
them as fast as they can click. Many times I wonder how ordinary, plain
users, can even get their computers running at all. The first time I
connected to the Internett on a steady line, I found that 186 mega left my
my machine during the 5- first hours. This was bit of a shoock to put it
midly.
There was a steady outgoing at about 10-30Kb/s. After some testing we found
numerours attacs, services reloaded, the machine rebooted with now chance of
aborting etc. I resofted, and installed a firewall. But this Win2000/XP
systems are supposed to be secure ? I find it funny that the OS warns me
about entering many of MS websites.......Telling me that this websites dont
have a current sertificat or something :-)

Now it seems I have some kind of control. But the MS Messenger autostarts
each time I want to read news, even if I have uninstalled the addon that
caused it to do that in the first place. I dont want to use messenger, but
it seems I am stuck until I find another good newsreader. I like outlook,
but NOT that messanger autostarts. I have disabled it from starting along
with windows.

What I really want with this long mail, is to get some feedback as to what
is empty rumors and what is to be taken for facts regarding all the critics
agains MS. Many people seems to hate them. Could we in this discussion try
to penetrate what is REALLY the source of this hatred. Is it the bloatedness
of the os, the slowness, the OS for dummies MS strategy, or what? Is it the
strange, non human format of their C-code, is it the documentaion, all the
default features, the loss of control over our PCs ? What is the ten main
reason that everybody hates MS :-) ???

So what I am looking for is the TOP 10 reasons why everybody hates MS. Or
more.¨
