    | Yes, I agree. But are there really any good competition? I would argue that
    | if anyone could design an OS, that could start its setup file from windows,
    | replace window with another OS and reboot and after the reboot, provide Open
    | Office support (or eqvivalent), Internet browser and basic tools like a C,
    | C++ compiler, Java compiler, an assembler, SQL /database support and a
    | Graphics library and drivers for the hardware on that machine, and run like
    | a 2003, professional quality OS. (NO SIGNIFICANT WAITS), it would kill MS
    | Windows in a couple of years.

Yes many attempts to build a bridge over the chasm between
the things we got today and what is really wanted/needed/desired.
Perhaps too many, good, but different ways point into the future,
but non of them are that generalised as M$ with all its nasty bugs.

    | So why don't somebody do it ? Is it impossible? With the resources that some
    | of its competitors have, why on earth have they not done it a long time ago
    | ?

As every non-M$/similar OS-Author got his own idea about new standards,
the missing agreement is for sure the main reason.

It has been done already for many 'special demands',
but this special OSes are not made to be used by everybody.
My KESYS is still such a niche-product.
Maybe if I publish my 'API'-functionality, some game-programmer
will find the speed convenient, others may like the transparency,
and perhaps it will once replace windoze at all.
At least I work on it. :)

Think of the bad quality of the so called 'sound-towers',
this 'all in one pieces' are cheap and therefore sold often (as M$),
as Mrs.Normal wont recognise the difference anyway.
But all those (few) who care about quality would buy separated units.
And the minority (professionals) wont have it below studio-equipment.

    | > perhaps due to the shame for "this" code ??

    | The hiding policy is BAD. Its espesially bad, since in the long run they
    | will hide it even from themself.
    | COM is a dead end. It will be replaced by .NET ? I hate the .NET even before
    | I tried it. But I really dont know that much about it. Is it portable, then
    | it is probably OK. If not I will never go for it.
    | I will go for ReactOS or Linux instead...(maybe ? :-) )

Linux follow the same 'school' as M$ and the libraries are almost identical.
I'm not sure about Rene's ReactOS use it's own library,
but I'd wait for all the bugs fixed anyway :)

    | > The paranoid "registry":
    | > what is the real sense of the reg.exe ?? (5 MB BS).

    | Yes the registry is a KILLER .... seems pretty silly. Why write
    | {12B7EE7C-F041-4013-BB4D-89C63F9E8658} to identify an interface, and then
    | name it with a long decriptive uniq name + version numbers in the name ?

    I think they contain user-registry/GUID/last paid upgrade/etc..

    | I may be to stupid, but I dont see the real use for them.
    | Maybe to identify each computer running the OS ?

Looks like 'big brother tries to watch us',
guess how many fingers I've raised yet ...

    | compatibility":
    | > most kernel code will run on 80186 machines
    | > (... and sell the same BS again and again ...).

    | I could belive that. I managed to get a blue screen on the first day I
    | started XP. After reading that some guy said it NEVER would show any BSOD, i
    | just laughed. But this was a nvidia driver problem, that was not MS
    | responsibility, but after all, if the reason wore properly traced, maybe it
    | was after all ?
    | When thinking about it, i NEVER spend as much time typing my own code, as
    | when I had to cocreate it with API functionality, I often could swear I work
    | MUCH faster without the API. If I could just get to thoose functions in
    | another way. But then again, maybe not.

It's very easy to beat M$-API in terms of size and speed,
of course this needs 'some' code-work.

    | So do you belive that longhorn will be the same OS, with a 3D shell on top ?

If it's an M$-product ... what would you expect?

    | Wolfgang. I sometimes fear that the PC area is comming to an end with
    | mobiles and pocket computers. What are your views on this ? I love my PC,
    | after all ....... (uhuhh).

Yes, new tiny chips without any coding-opportunity ... an awful view :)
No, this will not be an end, it will be (or already is) a new challenge
for all who have learned how any given hardware can be used best,
this means analysing, testing, .. and finally reprogramming or replacing.
