three hours to reply, did so with one word: OXI! 9 million strong Greece
then served mussolini and 44 million strong Italy the first axis defeat and
the first liberation of axis held land (Albania). TIME magazine's report
gave people hope that fascism could be defeated. America remained neutral:
Pearl Harbor was still a year away. hitler and Germany was outraged. Greek
guerilla warfare in Macedonia, Crete, and elsewhere delayed by six months
axis plans to occupy Moscow before the deadly Russian winter. hitler
underestimated the ancient birthplace of democracy and Western
civilization. 1 million Hellenes died in World War II. Sir Winston
Chruchill: "Today we say that Greeks fight like heroes, from now on we will
say that heroes fight like Greeks."
