Reviewing the info at:
http://stats.bls.gov/oco/ocos110.htm
it becomes apparent that the only reason for having a job title of "software
engineer" or "systems analyst" is the current, mediocre use of computer
resources characteristic of high level languages. The greatest,
outstanding achievement possible for a software engineer seems to be to
examine high level source code, and make recommendations for its
improvement. That of a systems analyst, on the contrary, is to be able to
actually perceive how another program could do the job better. Are
Universities afraid to concentrate on Assembly language, thus raising the
bar for everyone else, and perhaps loosing students to other Universities
that cater to business interests above and beyond the technical
requirements of scientific research?
