Locked memory

What does it mean when an area of memory is described as "locked"? I've used
the search tool in Adobe Acrobat to search the Intel Ref Manual but I can't
see anything there that looks likely. At the moment I'm just making a guess
about what it means. I guess that if you write to unlocked memory you might
be writing to disk, whereas if it's locked it's guaranteed to be present as
real RAM. Is that right, or have I got the wrong end of the stick?
