I see no such presumption. Where do you see that? If there is a *single*
change that would cause f to increase, and g to decrease (or vise
versa), then you can't "optimize for both".
I think you've misread Herbert's reasoning, and that makes the rest of
your post... ummm... what was that technical term Randy used? :)
