Okay, as I say, this was from a TV show with Bob Geldof actually in Africa,
actually with these people doing the work and so forth...
Hence, if there are "errors" then these are attributable to me in "recalling
it badly" or "misinterpreting what he meant" from what I saw...as Bob has
spent 20 years of his life trying to help Africa and learning about their
problems...plus, it would have been rigorously been "researched" and "fact
checked" before broadcast...
Actually, thinking about it further, Bob mentioned that the _inventor_ of
Coca-cola made his fortune out of the nut which Bob was holding in his
hand...what I think I've gone and done is confused what he meant...Bob was
just saying "this was _ONCE_ in Coca-cola" (but didn't say it was in there
today)...but I've "misinterpreted" him whilst trying to recall it and it is
_MY_ mistake to have not qualified it, as he did...I should have put that it
_WAS_ part of Coca-cola (not that it "is") but, yes, _ISN'T_ anymore because
things like "artificial flavourings" now fill the role that this nut used to
do...
Also, as Frank notes, there's "coca" and "cocoa"...if I recall, Bob did also
talk of "drinking chocolate" later on, so it was probably the latter -
"cocoa" - that he was talking about...again, my mistake in confusing the two
similar-sounding names there...
Unfortuantely, I didn't record the TV programme - and they don't seem to be
making it available "online" at the BBC or anything (at least, not
yet...indeed, it probably won't go "online" because they'll make a DVD out
of it and then do some "all profits to Africa" thing...so, of course,
they'll be wanting to "encourage" people to buy the DVD rather than download
a free copy of it) - so, basically, I can't go back and exactly verify each
"fact" that Bob stated...I'm going on "recall", which, apparently, is a
little "flawed" in this instance...
Problem is, as is somewhat the intention of the series, it had very good
examples of the problems involved...so, I wanted to convey that example I
saw because it highlighted the problem in a clear and obvious way (even more
so when you see the accompanying pictures and Bob's "plain and down to
Earth" way of explaining things)...unfortunately, "bad recall" has somewhat
ruined that little plan, as I got the facts all muddled up there...
Nevertheless, the exact details don't invalidate the basic underlying point,
of course: The trade isn't fair...laws and tariffs and "blocks" don't allow
them to sell perfectly useful and good products to people like us and not at
what would only be a "reasonable" price...
Millions are being delibrately allowed to die, simply because while Africa
is in poverty and unstable, we can _PLUNDER_ their natural resources - such
as natural Uranium deposits - as we feel like...so, their poverty and the
instability is _PERPETUATED_ - we supply arms to some "dictator" to keep the
wars going and the instability permanent...or add on so many "taxes" and
"tariffs", if not outrightly "block" any attempt at all, that there is no
possibility of trading with us to work their way out of it either - solely
to "get it on the cheap"...and if such maliciousness is done delibrately,
then that is the most purest strain of _TRUE EVIL_...
