Alex, you're assuming Rene is even telling the truth about his email
from RMS. Given his track record, I'd automatically assume Rene's
statement was an out and out lie. I don't know Stallman personally,
nor do I particularly have a tremendous amount of respect for him (and
this has nothing to do with the GPL, the dude is just *weird*), but one
attribute of RMS that I do respect is committment to his ideals. And no
way could I ever see him personally accepting the BPL (Betov Putrid
License) as "GPL-Compatible". There is little free about it. It
restricts the end-user's rights to do as they wish with the software by
controlling whom they can distribute it to. The GPL is very clear that
no such control is allowed.
OTOH, AFAIK RosAsm continues to be "dual-licensed." Meaning the BPL has
no legal force at all. People can do whatever they want under the GPL
and ignore the BPL to their heart's content. If the BPL restricts the
GPL further, then people can just ignore the BPL. It serves only one
purpose, to help demonstrate that Rene Tournois is, well, fill in your
own term...
No doubt, as long as Rene is sticking in code to determine whether I'm
using RosAsm and print appropriate error messages, I'm surprised that
the BPL doesn't disallow certain individuals by name (including your's
truly) and explicitly disallow the use of RosAsm for assembler
benchmarking tests :-)
Cheers,
