Good point. I hadn't really thought of the "natural" pronunciation as being a "speed" issue, but I guess it is. Sort of a "stall" occurs if it's not right.
Thinking more about it, I think the pronunciation of "HLL" may be influenced by the indefinite article preceeding it. "a high level language" or "an aitch ell ell". Depends. Almost like the "does the size belong in the opcode or in the operand" question...
