It is not a waste just a trade off between the time it takes to learn
how to program a system and the time taken to implement an

Tell that the millions of users who have to buy Gigabyte-sized HDs and
lots of memory to just get those bloated OSes running.
I've always complained about that, but never (since 1999) spent
enough time in Winbloats to back it up with evidence. Until this
last week.
I have 2 work laptops:
P3/700 256MB RAM, Linux - for cross-compiling mobile phone stuff
P4/2G 1GB RAM, WinXP - for reading PDFs and reading mail
Both are pretty slick machines. However, I was going to do loads
of very large builds last week, so I swapped hard disks over, and
gave the P4 to Linux. It compiled stuff so quickly I couldn't read
any of the text as it scrolled by.
WinXP, with egress filewall, VPN, PGP plugin, anti-virus, IM, VNC,
etc. which I either cannot or may not disable, take so much memory
that with just one program (Outlook, Acrobat, Firefox, IE, Excel,
PPT) even when doing _nothing_ I'm swapping.
It's unbelievable that linux quite happily runs, including X,
in 24MB, but windows can't do anything but idle with 256MB.
Small tight code is good - thank goodness we still have people
on this newsgroup and clax that remember that.
