Thanks for the help, everyone. I've probably decided to go with
learning assembly from the AoA with HLA, but I'm going to wait for some
of its detractors to reply, just to make sure I don't have a biased
picture. Particularly the RosAsm guy, who it appears has a special
place in his heart for hating HLA.

Just a bit of a nitpick, though: Mr. Hyde, the argument in your last
post is fallacious. Of course it's true that no one has ever written a
program in MASM that couldn't be translated to HLA, this is true of any
compiled language. It's also true that no one has ever written a
program in, for example, C++ that couldn't be translated to HLA, and
I'm sure nobody calls C++ an assembly language.
