hutch,

It seems to me that your experience with *nix systems, let's say Linux
ones, is just unlucky; it's true that installing Linux correctly
requires some work on some hardware, since not every single one is
directly available through the kernel. But if you take the time to
configure Linux, to compile your own kernel, and to add the missing
modules, you'll see that Linux is rock stable.

Lately, I'd say that the hardware recognition routines are MUCH better;
For example, if you give a try to Ubuntu ( or Xubuntu for have XFCE
instead of Gnome ) you'll notice that the installer configures most
systems flawlessly. It happens that for some exotic hardware, it'll
need a little "by-hand" help, but the community is active enough for
you not to be left alone; A quick search on the net will give you
solutions on how to install your hardware.

It's true that with windows everything is easier; It's mainly the fault
of the hardware constructors, who provide mostly Windows drivers, but
forget to do the same for Linux. Therefore, when a new hardware goes on
store, it takes some time for it to be usable under Linux, because it
requires a lot of work from the community to make the driver available.
But for older hardware, I'd say older than 3 months old, you can find
solutions on the net.

If you have time and will for installing an Apache / PHP / MySQL
machine, I'd advice you to take a look at Gentoo, it's my fav distro;
You'll find out that it's quite "complicated" to install ( but if you
follow the online documentation step by step anybody can manage it )
but once it's installed, configuring packages and dependencies is a
real pleasure, through their "portage system", which is similar to the
one available on BSD.

Cheers,
K
