If you really feel the need to defend your reputation and your product

directed toward newcomers to the group and post it once weekly come
rain or shine.
Jim, a FAQ won't work. It's too static and often direct responses are
necessary. And you're forgetting an important fact -- though a lot of
people abhor any thread in which Rene is involved, a lot of people are
also entertained by his antics.
Though a FAQ won't solve the problem, it is an excellent idea to
acquaint newcomers to what's going on around here. However, expecting
me to create such a FAQ is out of the question. If the regular
participants in this newsgroup want to get it under control, then this
needs to be a group effort.
Now I've thought about the problem a bit over the past 24 hours, and
the only solution I can come up with is to enforce voluntary
moderation. By "voluntary moderation" I don't mean people stop replying
to posts from Rene (or other threads that really ought to be
moderated). Instead, I suggest that such replies contain something that
makes them easy to filter by people who aren't interested in reading
them. For example, my first thought was "just put the word 'Betov'
anywhere in the subject line." Then anyone can completely ignore Rene
and any follow-ups to Rene by setting two filters -- one on Rene's
email address, and one on any subject line containing the word "Betov".
However, I have two or three problems with this approach:
1) Why give Rene attention that he doesn't deserve by having the
majority of posts contain his handle?
2) Threads involving Rene aren't the only ones that get out of control
around here (e.g., Hutch vs. f0dder).
3) Sometimes, people might want to post an off-topic message that isn't
a flame-fest, but may not be appreciated by people coming here to
discuss assembly language.
So let me make the following suggestion: let's create a FAQ that
explains the moderation process and *highly* recommend that people put
the word "moderated" in the subject lines of any response to Rene or
any other message that probably won't be of interest to someone just
wanting to read about assembly language here.
The first step is to create a FAQ explaining the moderation policy
That means that the people around here have to come together and
discuss which messages should have the "moderated" label attached to
them. The second step is going to require some friendly policing. And
Jim (or Rudy), as you seem to care about this issue a lot, I elect you
as the first "policeman". Your job, once the group can come up with
some recommendations, will be to post a follow-up message to off-topic
posts suggesting that people add a "moderated" word to their subject
lines when they respond to something off-topic.
Now *this* is something I could live with and would be willing to
participate in. And it would give those people who don't want to read
any Betov posts and easy way to cull most of the undesireable messages
around here.
So the ball is now in the ALA court-- put together a FAQ and then let's
try the voluntary moderation.
Cheers,
Randy Hyde
