Improving one's algorithm

I know that this is not the correct place BUT the people
here tend to use all sort of methods to improve one's code.
So here goes.
I entered a competition. Rank pretty low........ But from my solution
it shouldn't be THAT bad. The only way I can imagine is that the other
competitors narrow down their search and then START number crunching
within the range of FACTORIALS!

The competition is MAPMAKER.
TO BE FAIR: Please post your thoughts after the deadline.
As to the solution, I do not relish the thought of number crunching. I
expect the solution to be simple and elegant. Maybe this is my
weakness. BTW I went through the algo book and found no EASY algorithm
to help out....... Besides bubble sort. As I can see it, the BEST
solution is number crunching. Am I wrong? ..........
