and confusing.

It breaks also in Google groups, and I think it will break on most news
readers, as long as they base their grouping on the subject of the
post, and have no other way to group items.

In Google groups, they can still be grouped, because they use
"references" as shown below ( a post source from one of those thread
breaking message ) :

So basically it means that only Google Groups is going to thread them
correctly

Any half-way decent newsreader will use the Reference headers to do its threading. Mozilla certainly does; changes of subject lines (which happen often as threads drift) do not break threads.
