I don't think any RFC dictates how newsreaders are to display

Then what's the reference document I have missed ?
To me, RFC is the main candidate for checking the conventions of a
given standard.

In fact, RFC1036 says, with respect to Reference headers, "User interfaces need not make use of this header" when displaying messages.

Best not to use such broken interfaces.

Everybody can use the interface he/she likes, you can't say "let's
ignore those users, because they use a broken interface", it's often
not that easy.

It is even worse to force everyone to adapt to any broken interface out there..

The convention is to change the subject line when the topic
drifts too far from the original topic, as I have done here.

Show me where you got that "convention" please, I'm interested.

It has been common practice for as long as I can remember.

Actually, he is trying to avoid annoying many people.

By annoying another ones with the /// bad looking subjects ?

You can't please everyone.

Actually, a reading of RFC1036 suggests that the "///" should go after the "Re: ", not before it.

By imposing his own thinking to newsgroup readers who don't need him to
dictate what to read or not ?

Sorry but I don't agree, maybe you like people to decide for you what
to read or not. I don't.

No one is dictating to anyone (except you dictating how others are to use the subject header). Nothing prevents you from reading articles with "///" in the subject.
