I think gratituous bans have no place in a country that claims to be
democratic. Rather, people should be given the know-how to make the
right choices.

democracy = rule of majority.
majority is very easily controled by wealthy people.

you cannot just let things "go free". That is anarchy. Rule of
stronger. And we don't want it, history goes other way. As an example,
even anti-communistic economy profesor once told me that free market
can't work by itself. Things just *need* some rule, to be good for
majority (which is not same as not is the decision of majority)
