Capitalism is incompatible with democracy. It has to be put on a tight
leash. Note the recent trans-fat ban in New York City. At least,
there we have a government doing its job: working for the benefit of
its citizens.
Now if we can only extend that concept to State and Federal
governments...
It is not the duty of government to protect a citizen from his/her own
actions. People need to start taking responsibility for their own
actions and stop relying on the government to create airbags around
them.
What I describe is not a government protecting citizens from their own
actions. It is a government protecting citizens from corporate
irresponsibility by putting a leash on their activities.
Capitalism is at its healthiest when there exists little or no
restrictions on its activities.
Unfortunately, this is true. However, a 'healthy' Capitalism
ultimately leads to an corporate oligarchy. We DONT want a healthy
Capitalism! We want it limping along and sufficing until a better
system is invented.
Society/Community is at its healthiest when there exists little or no
restrictions on its members activities *AND* those members take
responsibility for their freedoms.
This depiction is best described by Anarchy. This is also not a
healthy thing as you are expecting too much from "responsibility."
A gun-maker should be allowed to sell you a pistol which is designed
such that the barrel points at your head when you hold it.
What if the manufacturer designs it one way but markest it another way?
Should there not be any oversight on what a manufacturer is allowed to
do?
If you make
such a purchase and use the tool in the manner designed, your
unfortunate 'demise' is your own fault -- there is absolutely no
logical reason for any entity to step in to prevent your demise; it is
also not logical for an entity to be tasked with the duty of preventing
the sell of said object.
Nathan.
If you buy something that is slowly poisoning you to death while the
manufacturer markets is as "perfectly safe" or even "a healthy choice"
should the government not interfere and force that manufacturer to
reveal the truth of their product?
You can't expect honesty and responsibilty from anyone wanting to make
a buck. They will try to sell you crap and call it gold. It is not in
an individual consumers means to investigate every singly product for
possible dangers. The government doesn't always do its job and often
it is responsible for pushing poisons on its own citizens for the sake
of industrial subsidies. It is refreshing to see that at least some
governments are playing a small part in protecting their citizens.
