To take yet another approach to the argument -- linux is all about
freedom. Why should people accept your choice in assembler? Shouldn't
they be free to choose their own?
Then again, since the beginning they've pretty much been forced to
accept GNU's choice in assembler. As history indicates, the 800 pound
gorilla usually wins (MASM under Windows, Gas under *NIX). People
generally won't look any farther than their distribution unless
they're *really* into the technology. "I need to write a little
assembler code under Linux? Oh, look at this -- the Gas assembler is
here. I'll just use that." And that probably covers about 99% of the
Linux world.
Allow me another example. "I need a web browser. Oh, look! IE comes
with Windows, I'll just use that." Microsoft destroyed the browser
market that way. Yeah, I know, Firefox is trying to make a comeback,
but you get the point.
