The only justification for a graphical desktop is the ability to
have many command windows displayed simultaneously. If you
communicate with a human, do you point on graphical pictograms
or do you speak (write) to him. Why don't you use the same method
when communicating with a piece of software?
Communicating with words (Command-Lines) implies a *Language*.
A user does not have to _learn_ any Language.
Human also don't have to learn a language. Why waste many
years to learn to proper speak and write a language and then
more years to learn foreign languages. This was only necessary
in archaic times. Instead today every newly born human gets a
box with many pictures. And if he is hungry, he shows the picture
of a Hamburger, if he is thirsty he uses the picture of a Coke
and if he wants sex, he shows the picture of a nude (wo)man.
Exactly this is what you promote with software.
Mind you, when
facing the Linux password bug, i had to re-boot in "rescue
Are you sure it was a bug and not a well thoughtout behaviour
which you didn't understand because you are used to think in
pictograms?
Your question is so absurd that i can't believe it. A user does
not even have to *know* that "bash" _exists_. This is utterly
unacceptable to have to use it.
That could have been said by my sister. She doesn't even
want to know why something doesn't work, it HAS to work and if
it doesn't, I have to make it work.
What would have been acceptable, when facing the bug, would have
been a Dialog, with a title saying: "Change PassWord:", an Edit-
control, and the required "Abort" and "OK" buttons.
No, the proper behaviour had been a text like: "Read the manual
before you even dare to touch my keyboard or mouse again".
Period. There
is absolutely nothing intelligent with knowing the tips&tricks,
which are nothing but reflects of the programmers failure.
If you don't know where the break is located in your car, then
this is the failure of the car designer? You have to get a licence
before you are allowed to public use a car, maybe the same should
be done for using a PC.
OK, i cannot shout at volunteers free works, but, saying that
the actual mess is "intelligent" is the reverse of truth.
Maybe this has nothing to do with "free works" but is because
they don't have to make a living from there work and therefore
are free to make a proper design and don't have to implement
a crappy interface just because the paying user wants it.
If you have to make a living from it, you have to sell the
customers Hamburger and Cola if they requests it. If you do
cooking for free, you can force your guests to eat healthy
food or stay hungry.
