A few points (as a high-energy physicist)
"As a high-energy physicist" what looks promising to you scientifically, or
politically as a viable high power energy source?
1) We ourselves are radioactive naturally, due to Potassium 40 in our
cells, which decays very slowly.Perhaps this is part of our global
evolutionary process, making egg and sperm cell changes? Think of the
ancient apes constantly crossing the area around the natural nuclear
reactors (6 found) in central Africa! Out of Africa indded!
If K-40 is the source of random genetic changes, how does one explain that
quite a few species, e.g., beetles, have existed for millions of years with
very few genetic changes? I'd think that a major constraint on the
existence of species, thereby forcing rapid evolution or embrace demise
would be more likely than random radiation considering the counter examples.
2) We believe the major source of heat in the earth that powers
volcanos and crustal movements is this same K-40 because of the vaste
quantity of potassium in the rocks, other sources simple help.
Then, you also believe this is the primary energy source for Earth's
geodynamo? What about lightning? Just where do all those electrons coming
from ice friction go when they strike the Earth? If we had a method to
store the entire energy or power output from multiple lightning strikes, do
you think it would change the "dynamic," or some functioning of the Earth,
say wind, or magnetism?
5) If one day we get really safe space transport vehicles, we could
theoretically shoot radioactive waste into the sun; best to do it from
the moon (even if that makesa two step process) to get the correct
trajectory and velocity and use free power and cheap casing
materials.. Right now it's NOT an option.
Why? We already wasted good money on a hole in the desert... Didn't you
scientists convince us we needed that? ;-)
And, I'm not sure that I like someone tinkering with the chemicals, or
reactions that are occuring in the sun... They have a natural balance.
Until we are able to test the effects of injecting the byproducts of nuclear
fission into an active nuclear fusion process a on Earth, I'd prefer nothing
be put into the sun.
