*One method: heat it to about 700C, and what melts is the plutonium.
The required equipment is available in any high school metal shop that
can melt and cast aluminum.
If you're starting from fuel rods, you need robotic handling with with
no microchip sensors or computer chips within 100 metres at best. Even
the remote cameras will burn out due to the alpha partilce and show
lousy pictures due to the gamma. Did I mention that the equipment will
become part of the nuclear waste?
About fusion energy sources. Assuming a H1-H2-H3-He products set, the
energy outtake is from beta and photon radiation to the near-vacuum
containing walls; so you extract heat from the walls.
I still feel a clathrate-trapped (or sintered spongy metal absorbers)
could help hold inter-atom distances (from thermal motions) down to
fusion process potential at room temperatures. However you need some
oscilliatory squeezing, to alternately squash and release. The Pons-
Fliechman device produced some radiation after all; they were lucky
they didn't get fried (as per theory). i.e. you want a demonstration
to work, but not with a high Q factor.
