BTW, you don't need any cameras or microchips - 1945 vintage
technology and mechanical remote manipulators will do the trick just
fine. The biggest trick is decent containment in an oxygen poor
atmosphere due to plutonium's propensity for igniting during machining
and working.

I meant, to see what you are doing. If you haven't done it before, you
need a man in the manipulator control loop;and that means vision.
Agreed that simple copper wire to motors will work fine, but modern
chips (even photon sesnitive memory chips) die rather quickly under
radiation, if silicon based; "radiation hardened" just means "will
last a bit longer".
One early job I worked on had to use circuits with radio valves and
mechanical relays (as I think, did the NASA Apollo rounds).

Again, new fuel rods are not particularly hot, so a modest chunk of
quartz window is sufficient for working with it. If you're really
concerned, you just need some shielding and some mirrors so you can
stay out of the line of sight.

But really, a new Pu239/U238 fuel rod (or equivalent, like pellets),
is not particularly radioactive (considerably more so than U235/U238,
but that's a really low base to start from), and then it's mostly an
alpha emitter (which is trivial to block).

What you really want to avoid is breathing the stuff.
