To rule out the obvious, first... does "hw.hla" exist? Not unusual for
"helpful" editors to save your file as "hw.hla.txt"...

For getting back to me. I was careful to ensure .txt wasn`t
appended to hw.hla.

Along about the same line of thinking, try this at the command prompt:

C:>copy con: q.hla
program q;
begin q;
end q;
^Z <--- hold CTRL and press 'Z' to create this line
C:>hla -v q
