I have an easy solution for you to remedy environment issues
that arise on Windows from HLA installation. Please download the HLA
IDE from this link http://www.geocities.com/kahlinor/HIDE.html and
unzip it into a directory of your choice. Run hide.exe, type in your
HLA program in the editor, or drag and drop an example program on to
the IDE and select Build & Run from the Make menu.
The Hide package includes everything essential to run HLA
programs and you neither need to download HLA to work with this
marvelous IDE and nor you need to setup any environment variables.

So tantalizingly close and yet I still can`t say "Hello World". I`ve
checked all the environment variables several times as was suggested by
Mr. Hyde in both pdf versions of his installation instructions and yet
when I enter "hla hw" at the prompt, I get a message "Could not open
hla.hw". I know it`s simple but I`ve been trying to fly with this for
a while now and could sure use some help. -v option informs me that
I do get to the point of using the parser....
"using command line [hlaparse -v -sm -test "hw.hla"]
then after public domain and version statements I get
"-t active"
"File: hw.hla"
"Output Path: "" "
"Could not open hw.hla"
............Anyone? Thanks, Plain
Thank You All:
For your suggestions. Sorry for the delay, I`ve been at work. I`m
grateful for all your responses. I am going to read them all till I am
reasonably sure I understand them then later today I will try the
solutions. Several different ways eh.... I`ll let you know what
happens tonight. Plain
Of course I had my file path backward in my question. It is indeed
hw.hla in the file as it should be. I tried Nathan`s suggestion and
though hla says it is assembling the hw.hla file, I see no results and
command prompt gives me a chance to start over as if nothing
happened...no errors etc.
Tried the parser command and received no errors there either so I
assume parser is ok.
I tried several different avenues to get hw to work and in the process
was greeted with the XP GUI that claims Windows doesn`t know how to
open the file. I showed it where HLA is and the file now opens.
Now I get this message when trying to assemble the file.....
"Assembling H:\hla\projects\hw\hw.asm
MASM fatal error A1000 cannot open file
Error returned by assembler = 1"
MASM is in the same drive (H) as HLA and as I mentioned before I had
moved the appropriate files from there to HLA as is my understanding of
instructions.
We`re moving along right? I mean we`re past the parser right?
Oh, and I`m enjoying the Write Great Code Vol1 book. It has helped a
lot in me understanding why the machine does what it does. If it just
had spark plugs..........Plain
