The first 1401 was essentially just 4k. Then later you could go to
16k, OR get index registers and have much less memory to allow bits
for the indexing. 12k Sounds a special.

ITIR that memory on that 1401 could be expanded to 16KB.

I wrote the 1401 disassembler, the music-on-the-printer-chain and the
132-byte overlaying tape operating system. The "poor man's operating
system" (4k) was written in my office too, but not by me. I then did
the 1406 multilplexor software (in IBM France) which ran on two 1403
printer buffer memory cores, from which we get banking, banking
terminals (and eventually on-line banking).
