My son is going to upgrade my Windows 98SE system on a Pentium III
to WXP on a Core 2 CPU. I want to continue to use GHOST as my
backup software. GHOST only supports the option I strongly find useful
when the file structure is FAT32 (namely GHOST produces a CRC file
during the backup only when there is a FAT32 - built in limitation I guess).
QUESTION: Will having a FAT32 file structure under WXP slow down
execution by more than about 10% as compared to using the NFTS file
structure? I don't have a problem with the maximum partition size under
FAT32 or the maximum size of a file (all my files are 2 GB or less).
No. FAT32 is less resistant to corruption in case of a crash, and there
are a number of features that you give up (junction points, hard links,
streams, file attributes, additional security), but it does work.
Vista will not install at all on a FAT32 partition. It can read and write
them, but it must be installed on NTFS.
Being able to produce the text CRC file (which is just a file that contains
a list of all the files in the backup image along with their 32 bit CRC)
under GHOST is such a help to managing my system that any minor reduction
in operating system speed is well worth while.
I find that to be a very strange assertion. There are any number of ways
to generate a CRC for all files on a drive while still allowing XP to
exploit the features of NTFS.
