FWIW, I have a smaller drive, partitioned with three equal 9.52gig
partitions all using FAT32. However, WinXP does not boot from this
drive, it boots from a much larger NTFS partition on a different
drive.

I think WinXP only converts a FAT32 partition to NTFS if you give
it permission to. IIRC, WinXP asked me if I wanted to convert
the three partitions and I said no.
