If you are running linux, gcc is fantastic. Otherwise, i'd use the gcc
port in Cygwin. No offense Maya, but I personally can't stand Dev C++, i
have trouble getting it configured the way I want, and it always seems
to do strange things with my libraries. Maybe I'm just not smart enough
for it, but then again I'm pretty much set in my command-line ways ;)
Also, if you are currently in school / college, you can usually buy
Microsoft Visual Studio for pretty cheap through your school. I got the
student edition of .NET for like $20 bucks. (I can't stand .NET, but my
professor yelled at me when I installed cygwin on one of the school's
machines.)
