Compiler question

Just wondering... In terms of C compilers, is Open Watcom any good?
I'm using it on the recommendation of a friend who says he wouldn't
use anything else, and because it's free.

I'm a raw beginner, so I'm not going to see any difference in how well
it works at this stage. I'm thinking more in terms of later on when
I'm writing bigger, more complex programs, and maybe getting into some
Windows specific stuff.
