The 4th commandment

"If thy header files fail to declare the return types of thy library
functions, thou shalt declare them thyself with the most meticulous
care, lest grievous harm befall thy program."

Just a historical curio here - I'm finding it pretty hard to imagine
what it would be like to have a library that didn't provide a header
declaring the functions in it... Are there still any such libraries?
What did people do? Look up the function declaration in a man page and
manually declare it? What would a library-writer gain by documenting a
function but not putting it in a header file? Any older folks care to
reminisce?
