Actually, I do have a filter set up for TPA. My filters are only on
sometimes, though
Hardly my fault. I'm doing what I can. The point is, there's a way that
Mr. Harter, or you, or anyone other regular doesn't need to read these
bothersome messages. Yet instead I get a rude and insulting reply from
him. A pointless one.
Are you to going to rude and insulting, like him?
That sentence no verb.
That's pretty weak, going after an obvious typo.
I don't agree that Richard Harter was either
particularly rude or particularly insulting (although tactful he was
not).
We'll have to disagree then. I think "bandwidth wasting public
nuisance" was way beyond non-tactful. He could have opened the
discussion with, "Do you really think these are a productive use of
your time or the group?" Then we could have had a discussion like real
people. Instead, he was an ass about it.
I don't completely agree with his position on net-copping
Yes, it's that favorite position, "It's ok when I netcop, but not when
you do."
, but he does have a point, and he was expressing that point.
Really, what point is that?
I think he
was uncharitable to say that you are a bandwidth-wasting public
nuisance. But had he said (what I suspect he actually meant) that a
large proportion of your articles are a bandwidth-wasting public
nuisance, I'd have agreed.
I don't accept the premise. I don't believe the TPA messages are net
waste of bandwidth (all messages are, after all, some waste of it). On
the whole, I believe the evidence is that newbies read and accept them
for the most part. The messages are short and to the point, and I feel
that it reduces further instances of full-quoted top-posting, hence a
net improvement in bandwidth.
Others may disagree, and think that newbies pick up the prevailing
attitude from inline admonishments. However, I feel those are often
ineffective, as they just say, "Please don't top-post." Newbies don't
always understand what that means. I crafted that short message to
explain (politely) and provide a link to further information. It's
small enough to fit into a standard .sig block.
They are only a public nuisance if the public chooses not to take
advantage of the filter opportunity.
As far as these specific messages, I probably average about one a week.
Sometimes a bit more. Sometimes less. Hardly a huge drag on the
newsgroup.
Now, the bit about percentages. What IS the proper Richard Heathfield
approved level of other posts before I can post a TPA? And why should
it matter? Where do you get these ideas?
If so, then you will plonked.
Why should I care about that?
You brought it up. I thought it was patently silly. Point out any
instance where I plonked someone merely for disagreeing with me on this
subject. Recall that last time we discussed this, I acknowledged that
you had a point about the repetitive messages and came up with a way
for you and others to be shielded from the awful effects. Yet you still
go on about it.
If not, I don't see why I would. I believe you are unfairly
maligning my reasons for plonking him.
And I believe you should not net-cop people unless you are, at the
very least, also in a position to provide them with good technical
help.
So I should just throw in some technical info that's a repetition of
what someone else has said? Or have to be first just to get in a TPA?
This is ridiculous. These Richard Heathfield rules are silly.
I've been here over ten years. I've posted plenty of technical
information. I'm a professional programmer. I CAN answer most
questions. I don't because others get to them first, because I'm busy.
I could just go ahead an post anyway, which a lot of people seem to do,
but I think that's pointless and a waste.
Now, let's go back to what really chaps me. YOU are one of the biggest
wasters of bandwidth here. Let's talk percentages. What percentage of
your posts are pointless arguments with Jacob Navia? And what do those
translate into for total bytes posted each day?
You had promised at one time that you would flag those posts. That
lasted about three times. You later promised that you were done with
him and had killfiled him. Then you created an excuse to open the
killfile and were back at him.
Beam, eye, your own, etc.
