I did a little more dinking with the compiler, and I'm convinced now that it
can't be fully trusted.

As others have pointed out, this is beyond the C standard and
off-topic in comp.lang.c, but definitely topical in
comp.arch.embedded.

In case someone is counting votes, I cast my vote in favor
of this thread -- including both the original question and
all the followups that have remained here -- being welcome
and appropriate in comp.lang.c.

It's about real issues with C. So how can it not be welcome? Very
interesting and C programmers should be aware of the issues.
