I agree that "the network" will certainly become almost homogeneous, but not
quite. You can't ignore the performance penalties: even with broadband, I'd
prefer to access data locally if it's available, /even/ if I don't back it up
as often as the network does (I'm making a big assumption here!).

But I'm looking at a system for a startup florist's shop at the moment, and I
think it's /just/ possible to outsource the accounting functions onto a
web-based system. Security is a primary consideration, and we probably won't
do it, but it's becoming possible.

Yes, there are lots of florists who do web-based ordering. I wanted to move
the whole shebang there so that we could have thin clients, with the
infrastructure being maintained as part of the service. And, of course, the
early adopters will have to pay through the nose - it's the way of the world.
