It evidently serves to inflame egos.

Your argument would be sound if it were presented as an argument for, in
principle, renaming the group.

A newsgroup's name and its actual usage should be in reasonable
correspondence; otherwise it is largely a private place for an inbred
coterie, but using public resources - it will not be found, reasonably
readily, by those who wish to participate in what it has become, but
will be found by those seeking what it claims to be.

Usenet name-space is a public resource, and should be conserved.

If you want a group suitable for the majority of present participants,
then agree a charter and name to match the /status quo/, and create a
group in a suitable location - Big-8, alt.*, or some other medium.

But the OP is in principle slightly premature : nothing should be done
until the effects of tomorrow's date, only presumably negligible at
present - have finished.
