You maybe Howard but not this rocket scientist operating from home. I
get my tips from here, clc - not Calgary.
My son buys me a DVD player for Christmas. Think to myself, "That's
bloody useless - I've only got VCRs". Well he loans me his copy of LOTR
(Part I), then subsequently "King Arthur" and "Troy" - I preferred the
latter of the trio.
Ah ha ! Nearly forgot this. Couldn't get my VCR to work as a result of
attaching the DVD - nor could my son, who isn't too high-tech, but
sensible. Shopping for my new XP and talking to a salesman, a lady
overhears my comments, and suggests "Contact Shaw they will do it for
nothing". Shaw is both my TV cable-provider and ISP. Phone - sure enough
girl says we will send somebody out and not charge you.
Firstly he adds fresh wiring so that I've got leeway to move the
equipment around - but then - connects firstly through the DVD player
and then through the VCR player before making the connection to the TV
set. Now unless you are an electrical/electronic geek you'd never figure
that one. And as he said, they constantly get calls from people with
$3,000 to $4,000 setups who haven't a clue how to configure their
entertainment unit.
Some off the cuff remark I made, and my son said, "Sure gimmie one". So
I gave him a Vivaldi CD - magic - I've got music coming out of my TV.
Yes I know you can do things with media players on computers - but had
never considered the possibility of a similar approach with a TV
configuration.
Not being tech interested - I'm not into cameras. Completely turned off
by the jargon - apertures, sunlight, whatever. Real simple when I was a
kid. A box Brownie - point the bloody thing and hope you got a decent
black and white. Digital cameras ? Roughly four weeks ago, my wife goes
in for some re-prints. Young girl swings into action, thinking I'm
another customer. "Nope. I'm with that lady at the counter". Anyway,
nice girl. She and I chat and she moves me over to the digital display.
I had absolutely no concept of digital = a CD containing your
photographic images, and more importantly the CD can be re-used. Then
two weeks later, quite by accident, I read digitals are currently some
80% plus of camera sales.
Familiarity breeds contempt. Well not really 'contempt', but rather
'knowledge'.
