Aren't there issues about licence servers as well? If you have access
to a licence server you should also have access to the software, media
and packaging.
BTW has anyone been able to get Micro Focus COBOL IMS programs to port up
to z/OS consistently?
We had about 3 happy campers who worked with CICS/COBOL/DB2 applications
who had no trouble porting code up.
In 3 years of trying we never had anyone port CICS IMS DBCTL or IMS MPP
code to z/OS and have it work the same on real IMS as on the workbench.
The amount of retesting and recoding involved wiped out any productivity
and z series CPU time benefit.
The absence of HDAM support was also an issue. That is, our monthly
billing process expected segments to be in DFSHDC40 randomizer
sequence and failed when MFC resequenced them in ascending key order.
They did not ask me to evaluate the IMS support until after they had
bought a 20 licence package. There were show stopping issues right off
the mark that meant we weren't able to try out IMS support while the
vendors's expert was onsite during our initialization and customization
phase. For example, MFC refused to let us insert a physically paired
logical child with symbolic pointers, claiming that IMS required us to
use a concatenated segment.
I ended up sending them IMS call test utlity output demonstrating that
this was a valid IMS Insert operation. That seems to be a common IMS
misconception for 3rd part product vendors. I got deja vu of having to
get Compuware to fix the same bug in FileAid for IMS.
Most of the issues seemed to be about the serial reuse or reentrancy
not being the same as on z/OS. That seemed surprising, since CICS code
has to be reentrant and only seemed to have a problem when the IMS DBCTL
interface was used.
