Not column by column and perhaps easy to crack, but better than nothing.
Lost/stolen data and failure to encrypt has come up repeatedly in comp.risks.
I've also seen encryption mentioned in IEEE Security and Privacy magazine as a
possible solution to data isolation needs in a shared data center.
