Well I do typesetting and indexing which are consultant type services. My
customers never suggest a rate. Instead they present me with a task and ask
"how much".

You also ignore the possibility of free assistance. Perhaps the problem is
simple enough that with a little coaxing the OP could state the problem and
someone here could help him out gratis. Certainly I have gotten free help
here. Unfortunately I don't know anything about Totem (does anyone here
know it?) so I can't be helpful.
