I really think that the thing about it is this....
The COBOL code that is out there now is stagnant. It is doing what is
designed for, has its bugs worked out and is a stable base upon which
businesses are running.
Of the code that is be WRITTEN these days the numbers probably favor C and
its various flavors, ++ and # on small systems. People are leveraging
this stability to build new interfaces into old and stable infrastuctures.
So COBOL really is a hidden commodity in that not much progressive work
is being done there BUT it is running the business of the 00's the same
as it ran the business of the 90's which ran the business of the 80's.
