I don't recall any products. But I do know that NZ Rail tried a
scheduling system in the late 70s/early 80s. Every wagon had a
'barcode' in steel which was read by scanners at the trackside of
several yards. Thus, of an evening, they knew the location of every
wagon and where it was to go based on the manifests. Their IBM 360/157
was fired up to calculate the shunting instructions to make up the
trains due to leave at 8 am and by lunch time the results started to be
printed out.
