"And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of
these is charity." (1 Corinthians 13:13, KJV)
I agree that the Bible teaches charity (giving to the needy), but the
translation of 'charity' here is archaic, and is correctly translated 'love'
in modern English translations. Greek has three words that are often
translated 'love': eros, phileo and agape. "Eros" is "romantic or sexual
love" (e.g. erotic), "phileo" is "brotherly love or friendship" (e.g.
philanthropy), and "agape" is "Godly love," the kind of pure, unselfish love
God has for us. A person should have all three kinds of love for their
spouse. The Greek word translated 'charity' above is agape. Agape always
seeks what is best for the one who is loved. Sometimes that means
sacrificial giving, even dying for them. But it could mean chastising them
(e.g. parental discipline). 1 Corinthians 13 is a wonderful description of
how agape love (God's love) works, and how Christians should embody God's
love. 1 Corinthians 13 is often called "The Love Chapter."
