I *have* been offended by someone I invited to pray *quietly* with me when
he launched into a full-voice tears-and-sobs prayer in a public place. I
doubt in his mind it was intentional; more likely he would describe his
actions as the reasonable result of being inspired (and thus obligated) to
behave in that manner, and therefore anyone who might object was clearly and
obviously possessed by the Devil.

I have way too much ramrod-background New England blood in me to find that
sort of behavior appropriate anywhere *except* in private/closed settings.
This wasn't such a setting.

I also had a friend who was confronted by a group of self-proclaimed
Christians as he was on his way to the Long Beach Gay Pride festival a
couple of decades back. While praying loudly and demonstrating the Gift of
Tongues they proceeded to beat him to the ground using their Bibles as
weapons because he would not turn back.

What would be your reaction if your children's school honored the Rev. Fred
Phelps with an invitation to perform the invocation at the graduation
ceremony?

I guess my point is that folks like that -- for whom I have no respect
either as Christians or as people -- have *exactly* the same right to
proclaim themselves Christians and to define their behavior as exemplary as
you or I do. It is for that reason that I tend to mistrust those who preach
first and demonstrate later. Show me, don't tell me.
