The Doctrine of the Immaculate Conception is purely and solely about
*Mary's* conception. Jesus' *conception* was immaculate in the "human"
sense because it occurred through the actions of the Holy Spirit, and not
Joseph. The defense of Mary being sinless through life was so that she
would be indisputably worthy of being the Mother of God. Note that I'm not
stating agreement with these doctrines, I'm just trying to restate that
which I was told in religious studies about them. See the relevant subjects
in the Catholic Encyclopedia for details (e.g., Infallibility, Immaculate
Conception, Christology, Ex Cathedra).
