Doesn't matter whether you believe in God or not. Or the spaghetti
monster. Sooner or later, as you probe backwards in time with your
thoughts, you'll arrive at the realization that there must have been a
first "something" which was "always" there.

As an agnostic, I can't deny that "something" might be God, although I
have no reason to think it is so; I'm more comfortable with the idea of
an eternal, infinite emptiness (a vacuum, actually, full of vacuum
energy) out of which various ylems pop into existence (a la Hawking)
which may or may not expand into a universe such as ours. In another
post I pointed out that since there's been one big bang, it's reasonable
to posit that there have been others. Given that, there must have been
SPACE between them - therefore infinite emptiness, rather than
nothingness which suddenly became an infinitesimal somethingness.

Starting off with such a vacuum means that we don't have to worry about
an infinite regress. If we do it by regress, there are now in existence
an infinite number of things, each of which was produced by and produced
another thing, none of which is less than an infinite number of years
old (except, I suppose, the current one which MIGHT be "nearly"
infinite). One infinity is better that an infinite number of
infinities. Although it's possible that there are an infinite number
