<big snip>

I use Fujitsu Cobol v3 on my pc and am more than happy with it.
However, I have not used it or any of the more recent versions
commercially so can not comment on how good it is for real work (others
on this group will comment).

If you opt for the convert to Java option then you will almost
certainly fail (more so than the big failure that your organization is
already heading for). At one place where I worked, the management hired
an all-new team with no CICS/Cobol experience and expected them to code
complex screens from the start. Eventually, they paid for a CICS
course. One week later some ashen-faced programmers arrived, junked
their previous three months work and re-wrote the entire system. Good
luck. Go for re-writing it all in Java. You will probably fail but (a)
you will have fun trying and (b) you will become instantly more
marketable.
