No, anymore it's about *us* respecting *them*. I would absolutely *love* hearing a public figure stand up and say something like...
"Look, if you don't like prayer, you don't have to bow your head, and you don't have to pray in your heart - you can sit and do a crossword puzzle for all we care. But we are *going* to have this prayer - the majority of people want it, it's traditional, and we're not going to change our way of doing business because *you* are offended. There are lots of things that *you* do that offend *us*, but we don't demand that you cease them; rather, we're told we have to be tolerant of it. Well, what's good for the goose is good for the gander - so tolerate *us* for a change.
... and then rear back his head and bellow 'ALLAHUUUUUUU AKHBAR!'? How
about 'Nam Myoho Renge Kyo'? Maybe the sacrifice of a goat to Legba, or a
human heart on the Altar of the Sun? How about a little ritualised temple-prostitution... Astarte has been *so* neglected as of late.
What you do in private is your own concern... but on the public dime or as a representative of the public weal... not with *my* tax dollars, no.
So, you don't want your tax dollars spent on toleration of Christianity - but toleration of Islam is fine? Glad to see which side you're on.
Suing to end traditions simply because they have something to do with religion is laughable. That the current court systems have actually found the cases to have merit is deplorable. Nowhere in the Constitution is anyone guaranteed the freedom to not be offended - but, it seems that every group except Christians seems to have that right. I can only hope and pray that we have turned the corner on some of that lunacy - a Republican in the White House in 2009 will be of great help.
As much as is within me, and my vote, I will be fighting to correct that in this country until I die. I will be fighting against the liberal definitions of terms, the framing of issues - defending the assault on our nation's culture and heritage from whatever quarter they come.
(Funny how none of these people who are so opposed to "religion in government" aren't refusing to spend money because it says "In God We Trust".)
