Most of the mail I get from German friends does not observe it. The older

I think it would be very hard to make an effective grammar/spell
checker for German.
I dunno. Declension and conjugation's pretty regular, and German spelling's
quite straightforward (as is spelling in most languages that use Latin,
Greek or Cyrillic alphabets at least). English is the odd man out on the
spelling front. Most other languages have undergone orthographic reform
periodically in their history; English spelling represents pronunciations
from six centuries and more ago in some cases, and in other cases represents
pronunciations in the languages from which they were borrowed. Personally,
I don't think you'd *need* a spell checker that much for German, any more
than I'd expect "spelling" to be a specific ongoing subject in German
education.
