Having said all of the above, I have to agree that payroll is one example
of something that is best addressed (at least right now), by a batch
process.
Payroll IS a batch process.
While conventionally the batch size is some multiple of weeks or months, it
can be a day.. and I guess - in theory anyway - it could be as little as an
hour; and of course for piecework it could be a piece.
When the underlying business process is itself a batch process, seems to me
the data processing for same should also be a batch process.
