Re: VisualAge Cobol Compiler prob on XP Pro

If I recall from when I installed both, VMWare Server is very simple and
much nicer than Virtual PC. VMWare Server is free (as is VPC). I'm sure if
you got the 'industrial' (cost) version of VMWare it would have a lot more
features that you probably don't need, this adding to the complexity, but I
think the free VMWare Server should be great for what you want.

Paul,
Am not an OS guy so my retailer just re-installed XP (after Cobol had
done its lethal install) . He suggested Microsoft's Virtual PC and
which he loaded with the NT as guest. We talked VMWare but he
intimated it was VERY complex. so at the moment I'm trying this VPC
route.

So far I've got my DB2 on there, COBOL and CICS tomorrow!

Might you know of any specific advantage for VMWare vs VirtualPC?

And thanks for the 'LOTS of probs...' note - at least I learned it's
not just me.

Pity IBM couldn't do something - possibly uneducated thinking, but
might it not be some miniscule fix since it's always the same error I
get executing programs. Such a fix would also let me use DB2 Express-C
V9!!! - c'est la vie..

LOTS of problems doing this. I strongly suggest downloading a free
copy of VMWARE, then load and run an Windows NT4.0 instance of the
compiler under that. Works great.

Hello,

Has anybody had any experience upgrading from an old Windows NT
Thinkpad with VisualAge Cobol V2.2, CICS for Windows V3.1 and DB2 V7.1
to a new platform with upgraded software.

I tried going to a new XP Pro laptop with the old software and the
experience was brutal and failed.

Specifically the Cobol caused all kinds of nightmares. It installed,
programs compiled, but they all failed upon execution with the same
'The application failed to initalize properly (0xc0000005)'.

Any suggestions please/thanks.
